A lot of caregivers like myself are placed in a situation where we are treated like slaves and unable to speak up from fear of losing our jobs. The government has given employers the chance to abuse us because of employer specific work permits. Caregivers are coming together with one voice for the government to hear our calls on better wages, work conditions and permanent residency status on landing.
Kara Manso arrived in Canada through the Live-in Caregiver programme in 2012. She has worked in precarious jobs and was laid off twice. It has led her to join and organize with the Caregivers Action Centre which she now heads to put a stop on the abuse of migrant workers.
