I have worked in a tomato farm, Savoura. We were not given the minimum safety equipment at work to work with pesticides and other toxic chemicals. My friend became sick and the manager refused to take him to the doctor, we had to strike for days in order to get the farm owners to seek medical attention for our sick colleague. Days later, after demanding light at night on the farm in order to work I have been fired. After five years of organizing and mobilizing I have won the lawsuit against Savoura, the judge sentenced that I have suffer from psychological abuses and discriminatory treatment. Savoura filed for bankruptcy 2 months before so now the judge’s sentence has no value at all, even though Savoura keeps working with another name and the same TFW have kept working all through the bankruptcy process.
Exclusive contracts, the inability to change employers, guarantee that employers can be as abusive as they choose to be because the workers are isolated and unprotected.
